Vision Forward: Celebrating Robert Wilson, Monk Parrots' 15th Anniversary, and Launching New Work

Join Monk Parrots Performance (NYC) for a rare and intimate evening honoring the visionary work of Robert Wilson.

This evening marks a milestone — the 15th anniversary of Monk Parrots Performance — as we honor Robert Wilson and support the company’s next production, the ATOMIC war.

Artistic Director Luke Landric, Ann-Christin Rommen (Bob Wilson’s associate director for more than four decades), actress Anke Engelsmann (longtime Wilson collaborator), and other special guests (TBA) will gather for a one-night-only conversation about Robert Wilson; the legendary director and visual artist whose radical experiments transformed the landscape of contemporary performance.

This special event about art, process, and influence will celebrate Monk Parrots' 15th anniversary and also feature a first glimpse of Landric’s new image-based, music-driven play, the ATOMIC war: a cloud is best measured when it is up—a bold new work inspired by the spirit of Wilson’s early epic, the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it is down.

Synopsis: After an Earlier incident is an experimental play exploring the concept of hauntology, i.e., the past inside the present. Re-scored by Austin-based composer Peter Stopschinski for electric guitar, electric violin and amplified orchestra, this production explores gender roles in power dynamics and reimagines Scotland’s most infamous literary figure as a premier homebuilder in a McMansion hell. Conducted by Samuel McCoy, directed by Luke Leonard, and starring twice Grammy nominated baritone John Marcus Bindel in the title role.

Dixon Place Presents Kirk Lynn's The Cold Record - PLUS - My Little China Girl by Soomi Kim

Dixon Place Presents
Kirk Lynn's "The Cold Record"
~PLUS~ MLCG (My Little China Girl) by Soomi Kim
February 9, 2017 at 7:30PM
Main Stage
Running time approximately 50 minutes

THE COLD RECORD
Luke Landric Leonard is the 12 year old boy in a Workshop Performance of Kirk Lynn’s new one-person play. The Cold Record, the story of a boy who left school with a fever more days than anyone else ever in the history of fevers and the trouble he got into for loving the school nurse. Co-Directed by Leonard’s 13 year old daughter, Gates.

MLCG (My Little China Girl)
When David Bowie died, performing artist Soomi Kim was suddenly reminded of her own coming of age as a Korean American in the MTV generation and her adolescent desire to be the exotic Asian woman in Bowie's China Girl video. MLCG (My Little China Girl), created by Kim in collaboration with director Suli Holum (Pig Iron Theatre, Stein| Holum Projects) and video artist Kevan Loney, is a high octane solo performance that traverses Kim's experiences as a first generation Korean American navigating the tyranny of Western perceptions of beauty; the absence of Asians in mainstream American media while coping with profound loss.

Tickets: $15 in advance, $18 at the door, $12 students / seniors / ID NYC
